What is loneliness?

Loneliness refers to the negative feelings you experience when you're emotionally or socially disconnected from others. It's slightly different to social isolation, which is the state of having minimal or no contact with other people. You can feel lonely without being socially isolated, or be socially isolated without feeling alone.

The impact of loneliness

1 in 4 Australians experience problematic levels of loneliness. It can cause a range of physical and mental health complications, like poorer sleep, mental illness, and development of dementia.People who are Indigenous, young, elderly, have a disability, or live alone are more likely to experience loneliness compared to other groups.

Loneliness and the rising cost of living

According to the 2023 Life in Sydney Ipsos poll, people who are lonely are more likely to be concerned about the cost of living. As rent, electricity and food get more expensive, people are less inclined to spend money on socialising.Luckily, there are many ways you can show someone you care, without spending a cent.
