What is loneliness?

Loneliness refers to the negative feelings you experience when you're emotionally or socially disconnected from others. It's slightly different to social isolation, which is the state of having minimal or no contact with other people. You can feel lonely without being socially isolated, or be socially isolated without feeling alone.

The impact of loneliness

1 in 4 Australians experience problematic levels of loneliness. It can cause a range of physical and mental health complications, like poorer sleep, mental illness, and development of dementia.People who are Indigenous, young, elderly, have a disability, or live alone are more likely to experience loneliness compared to other groups.

Loneliness in a post-pandemic world

About 1 in 2 Australians felt more lonely when COVID-19 began. We couldn't enjoy social events in person, and went months or even years without seeing friends and family. While many of us have returned to a "new normal", some of our most vulnerable Australians are unable or afraid to leave the safety of their homes. They deserve to feel Not Alone, just like everyone else.

1 in 2 Australians feel lonely at least once per week
